Dr. Claudia Fegan, past president of Physicians for a
National Health Program and currently chief medical officer at
John H. Stroger Jr. (Cook County) Hospital, appeared
on the "Up with Chris Hayes" show on MSNBC on March 31 to
discuss the Supreme Court and the Affordable Care Act. Also on
the panel were Yale University law
professor Akhil Amar, former President Obama adviser Neera
Tanden and the Washington Examiner's Tim Carney. The clips of
Dr. Fegan above are excerpts from a much longer
segment of the show which is available from MSNBC
In her closing remarks, when asked what her takeaway from the
discussion was, Dr. Fegan said, “I didn’t realize that the complexity of
the Affordable Care Act would make single payer seem like the most
logical way to provide our patients with what every patient wants: to be
treated with dignity and respect and have access to the health care
that I believe they deserve. How can we be the most powerful nation in
the world and not guarantee access to health care, which has such an
impact on people’s quality of life and is so important to the health of
the nation?”
